Baia Verde or Lido San Giovanni: which beach to choose in Gallipoli

Two beaches just minutes apart, but with very different personalities: Baia Verde is about space, beach clubs and evening life, Lido San Giovanni about proximity to the old town and everyday convenience. Here's how to choose based on the holiday you want.

Baia Verde: space, beach clubs and beach life

Baia Verde stretches for over a kilometre south of Gallipoli's old town, with light, fine sand bordered by a line of low dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub. It's the stretch of coast with the highest concentration of beach clubs on the whole Gallipoli coastline: equipped lidos with sunbeds, umbrellas and food service alternate with free public sections, so you can choose every day between organised comfort and simplicity. The sea is shallow and gently sloping near the shore, easy for a relaxed swim, then opens onto the clear turquoise typical of the Ionian side of Salento. In peak summer weeks, some stretches of Baia Verde also come alive in the evening, with music and beachside aperitivo.

Lido San Giovanni: the first beach, steps from the centre

Lido San Giovanni is the stretch of beach you reach first along Lungomare Galileo Galilei coming out of Gallipoli's old town, before you get to Baia Verde. The beach is sandy, with a shallow seabed similar to Baia Verde's, but the setting is more urban: right behind the shoreline you'll find the first houses, bars, tobacco shops and small supermarkets, useful if you don't want to travel far for everyday needs. It's a convenient stretch of coast if you're staying near the old town and want to reach the sea on foot in a few minutes, without organising a car trip or a shuttle.

Sand and sea: the physical differences between the two beaches

Both beaches share the same sandy shoreline and the same crystal-clear sea typical of Salento's Ionian coast, but with a few nuances worth knowing before you choose. Baia Verde has a longer, more continuous coastline dotted with low dunes and patches of Mediterranean scrub, which makes it easier to find quieter corners even in peak season, simply by walking a little further south. Lido San Giovanni is more compact, framed by the urban fabric of the promenade, with an equally shallow seabed but more of a "town" feel and less of a dune landscape. On calm days, the colour of the water is very similar on both stretches: a transparent turquoise that's one of the main reasons people choose this part of Gallipoli.

Baia Verde is better if you want beach life and groups of friends

Baia Verde is the natural choice for groups of friends, young couples and anyone who wants to mix swimming, beach sports and aperitivo without moving around too much during the day. The concentration of beach clubs makes it easy to plan a full day by the sea, with the option to switch clubs or move to a free stretch within a short walk, and summer evenings often bring music and life well into the night.

  • Anyone who wants beach sports, music and aperitivo
  • Anyone who prefers more choice between equipped clubs and free beach

Lido San Giovanni is better if you're travelling as a family or a couple

Lido San Giovanni suits families with young children and couples looking for practical convenience rather than a lively scene: minimal distance from the old town, everyday services within easy reach, and generally a calmer pace than the younger, livelier stretches of Baia Verde. It's also a good option if you're getting around without a car and want to reach the beach directly on foot from the centre.

  • Anyone who wants to stay within walking distance of the old town
  • Anyone looking for a quieter holiday pace

Distances and how to move between the two beaches

From our apartment in Baia Verde you can reach your beach of choice in a few minutes on foot, while Lido San Giovanni and Gallipoli's old town stay within easy reach on foot, by bike or with the free shuttle the municipality runs along the seafront in summer. You don't have to choose once and for all: many guests alternate between the two beaches during the same holiday, perhaps a morning at Baia Verde and a more urban afternoon toward Lido San Giovanni. If you're still deciding where to stay, an apartment in Baia Verde puts you in a strategic position to move easily between both areas, without depending on a car every day.

Crowds and timing: when to go to avoid the crowds

In peak season, especially on July and August weekends, both beaches fill up during the central hours of the day, roughly between 11am and 4pm. Early morning and late afternoon tend to stay quieter on both stretches, with more pleasant temperatures and fewer people in the water. Lido San Giovanni, being closer to the centre and to parking, tends to fill up first on busy days; Baia Verde, being longer, generally offers more room to find a free stretch of sand even when the rest of the coastline is already packed. Always check conditions on the spot, since crowd levels can vary a lot from one day to the next.

Our take: which beach for your holiday

There's no single "better" beach between Baia Verde and Lido San Giovanni: the right choice depends on what you want from this Gallipoli holiday. If you're after beach life, space and evenings that stretch from one club to the next, Baia Verde is the natural answer. If you'd rather stay a short walk from the old town, with every everyday service close by and a calmer pace, Lido San Giovanni is the more practical choice, especially with young children. The good news is that staying in Baia Verde means you don't have to pick just one: you can try both beaches during the same holiday, just minutes away on foot or by bike.
